  • Leaders! Need a little help with your Den Meetings? In the past, one den used the Denner program. Each month, a different Scout helped keep the other Scouts busy with an activity before the meeting started. He led the den in the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of each Den meeting. At the pack meeting, he read the Den Report. This gave the Scout the feelings of responsibility and making a contribution. Hey, if it works...
  • Don't forget to check out the Other Scouting Info links on the Other Scouting page. There are links to BSA, the Scouting Magazine online edition, and more!

Training Course Information

  • New Leader's Essentials replaces Basic Leader Training. If you've already done the old course, you are covered. This is a requirement for all adult leaders. The morning portion of the program is a requirement once in your Scouter career. The afternoon consists of various Cub Scout Leader Specific breakout sessions. You attend the relevant one based on your role in the Pack. If you change roles, you should at least attend the breakout session related to your new role. These trainings will cover in detail your role in the Pack and what you will be working on with the Scouts in your den. The leader is considered trained upon completion of New Leader Essentials and the Leader Specific training for that position.
  • BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) is the old Webelos Outdoor Leader Training.  This is a one day training course and does not require an overnight camping stay.  Specifically targeted for new cub scout leaders with a plan for entry-level outdoor experience for the pack or den. It is designed to teach basic outdoor camping skills to Cub Scout Leaders. Cooking, outdoor equipment and trip planning are just some of the areas covered (Note: As of Janruary 01, 2002, any Pack that is applying for a Tour Permit to go camping must have at least one Leader with this training listed on the Tour Permit.)
  • Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is the old Scoutmaster Fundamentals or the new BALOO PLUS MORE.  This is a 2 1/2 day training course that does require an overnight camping stay for the duration of the training.  It is designed for all levels of adult scouters involved in boy scouts, cub scouts and venture crews, as well as district, unit, roundtable, council, executive committee & board members.  This course is a prerequisite for future Wood Badge trainees.
  • New Leader's Fast Start Training  Includes the new Tiger Cub Den Leader! This can be accomplished online, and is the first step in being a Trained Leader. This is required for ALL Leaders. This course is broken down into pack positions. Each section is about 20 minutes. New leaders should watch their related section as soon as possible after joining.
  • Webelos Leader Outdoor Training. This course is designed to help Webelos Leaders prepare for taking their scouts camping. It typically consists of a Friday night and all day Saturday. How to run a campfire, how to start a fire, camping equipment selection, camp cooking and other outdoor related topics are covered.
  • Youth Protection Guidelines. The course is a 1 1/2 hour tape and covers how to spot such things as child abuse and how to report it within the BSA organization. It is also in the front section of the Cub Scout's handbook at all levels. Every leader and parent is encouraged to take this course or read this section of the handbook. Let's keep our Cubs safe!.
  • Supplemental Training. This is continuous learning designed for the different programs. It may be taken at a Cub Scout pow wow or other type of event.
  • Pow Wow. This training is usually a whole day, where leaders have a choice of classes to select from. Crafts, cooking, games, songs or unit administration are just some of the courses that might be offered. Pow Wow's are usually held once a year.
  • Roundtables. Most will have splits, similar to those held in Cub Basics where leaders will break of into groups and cover material based on recommended monthly themes. These splits are a time where a leader may be taught a new craft, skill or get advice on how to solve a problem. Roundtables are a good source of continuing education.
The Dan Beard District person responsible for Training is Gary Thorn. The Council person responsible for Training is Laura Wester. She can be reached at 331-7980.
