Pinewood Derby Reminders

1/23/2011

Hello Pack 216!

We hope you are doing well on your Pinewood Derby Car.  We had a lot of Scouts come by on Saturday to do preliminary weigh ins, and the cars we saw look great.  We did see some things that we want to remind people can get your car disqualified.

1)       Wheels.  Only the black plastic wheels that came with the car kit that was provided to you by the pack are allowed.  No other wheels (colored – even BSA) are allowed.  If you have damaged a wheel we can provide an official replacement .  The car must be built with the block, wheels, and nails in the kit provided by the pack.  After that it is ok to supplement with spoilers, drivers, add on wood, etc. as long as it still meets the overall size requirements.

2)      Overall length including any attachments shall not exceed 7.0".  If you are right at 7.0” you may want to consider shaving off 1/16”.  If you car does not fit in the box we have to check it against you will have to modify it on race day to comply.

3)      Axles must be visible to the judges.  If you have damage to your axle slots and need to repair them, you must do so in such a way that we can see that you used the original nails with no modification.

Remember that there is still one more opportunity to have your car pre-weighed and checked out tomorrow, Monday, January 24 (6:00pm - 7:00pm) at West Park Clubhouse (121 ParkOaks Ct.).

All the rules and the schedule can be found athttp://pack216.cary.nc.us/uploads/5/8/6/4/5864918/pack216_pinewood_rules_2011.pdf

Good Luck!  Do your best and have fun!

Blue and Gold Banquet

1/22/2011

Pack 216 - Get fired up!!!  The Pack 216 Blue and Gold Banquet will be held on Sunday, February 27 from 3pm to 6pm at the Green Hope High School Auditorium.

What is the Blue and Gold Banquet?  Most Cub Scouts celebrate Scouting Anniversary Week with a celebration called the Blue & Gold Banquet. In nearly all packs, the annual blue and gold banquet, which is often the pack meeting for February, is the highlight of the year. It brings families together for an evening of fun and inspiration.  The purpose of the blue and gold banquet is to celebrate the pack's anniversary, recognize pack leaders and other adults who have been instrumental in the pack's success, and inspire the leaders, Scouts, and parents.   Our Webelos II’s will be awarded their Arrow of Light and will bridge over into Boy Scouts.  Our younger Scouts will be awarded badges of rank they have attained.

Each Den needs a representative for blue and gold banquet to help with set up and clean up and to coordinate den plans. It is up to each Den to come up with their own meal for the event.  Some Dens have potlucks and some Dens will bring something in, like pizza.

Please send your representative’s contact info (including email) to Margo Peterson at: margop621@yahoo.com

Time to Renew Membership!

1/22/2011

Hello Cub Scout families!

It is time to recharter which means renewing your son's membership with the pack for this coming year.

I will have a table set up at the Pinewood Derby on Saturday, Jan. 29th.  Please stop by and recharter.  The fees to recharter are either $58.50 or $48.50.  The difference between the two rates is that the first one includes a copy of Boy's Life magazine.  The fees are broken down as follows:  council fee: $12.50, Boy's Life magazine: $10.00, council insurance fee: $1.00, and our pack fee: $35.00.  All checks should be made payable to "Pack 216."  Renewal is an easy process - no paperwork to fill out, just verify your information and write a check.

If you are unable to attend the Pinewood Derby, please email me at membership@pack216.cary.nc.us to make other arrangements.

HELP WANTED:
** On another important note, this is my last year as Membership Chair.  My son will be a Webelos II next year and I need to turn over my duties to another parent.  A current Tiger or Wolf parent would be ideal.  The job is an important job with the pack and it's one that can be done mostly from home on your own time.  If you want to help out but can't make the den or pack meetings, this could be a wonderful way to get involved and do so on your time and schedule.  Duties include:  spring/summer recruitment of new members for the pack, distributing and collecting registration forms, keeping the membership roster up to date, & rechartering the pack.  Our pack is run by so many people including your den leaders who give so much of their time to help your kids.  Please consider doing your part too.  If you have questions or want more information, please send me an email or come see me at the Pinewood Derby. **

Thank-you!
Michelle Marshall

Volunteers
The Pack relies on the efforts of many adult volunteers to develop and run the Pack.  More than a third of all families have at least one adult serving in a full time role as Den Leaders, Assistants, or members of the Pack Committee.  Not everyone needs to be a uniformed leader to help out.  From time to time, we also need adults to help plan or assist with specific pack activities.  Please consider contributing your time if you can.

Specifically, we are recruiting a Membership Chairperson for the 2011-2012 scouting year.  The job is very flexible in  that you pretty much can do it all on your schedule.  Contact Mike Lopez atchair@pack216.cary.nc.us if you would like more information on this or other opportunities to volunteer.

Keep in Touch
Always find the latest Pack information on the web at http://pack216.cary.nc.us.  Hopefully you're also signed up to receive pack news through e-mail, if not there is a sign-up form on the website.
