2016 Big Trip - April 15-17

sOur annual "Big Trip" is to Oregon Inlet Campground NC! Oregon Inlet Campground is the northernmost campground on Cape Hatteras National Seashore. When camping here, you are within a short distance of the full service town of Nags Head to the north, and the world class fishing at Oregon Inlet to the south.

Oregon Inlet Campground NC   3:30 hr from Cary

Open to all families including bridged AOL scouts as well as siblings.

Program includes:
  • Friday night and Saturday night camping at Oregon Inlet Campground NC
  • Bodie Island Lighthouse
  • Jockeys ridge
  • Roanoke Island Festival Park program/attractions
  • Pack potluck dinner
  • Evening Beach hike 

Tentative Schedule:
Friday - April 15th 
  • Arrive between 1pm and 7 pm.  Dinner on road/on own
  • Set up camps.  Relax, hike on beach.
  • 10 pm – lights out
 
Saturday - April 16th
  • Breakfast on own
  • 9-10 am - Bodie Island Lighthouse (5 min from campground).  Climb light house (pay on own.  $8 adult, $4 children 11 and under)
  • 10-10:30 - Drive to Jockeys Ridge (15 min from Bodie Island)
  • 10:30 – 12 Hike around Jockeys Ridge
  • 12-12:30 - Drive to Roanoke Island Festival Park (25 min from Jockeys Ridge)
  • 12:30 1:30 Picnic lunch (on own/with Den; tailgate style) in parking lot of Festival Park (or on your own in town)
  • 1:30 – 4:30 Roanoke Island Festival Park, Settlement Site and museum (park entrance included in cost)
  • 4:30-5:30 Return to camp, rest, prep for dinner
  • 5:30-7:00 Dinner (Potluck, Pack provides meat/meatless main item [e.g. hot dogs, vegetarian option]
  • 7:00-9:00 Evening hike on beach
  • 10:00 Lights out
 
Sunday - April 17th 
  • 8 am – up (earlier to see sunrise)
  • 8-9 – Breakfast and clean camp
  • 9:00 – depart
  • Options for additional sites/attractions on Sunday morning (on own or with Den)
  • Wright Brothers Memorial $7 per adult, kids free 
  • Elizabethan Gardens $9 per adult, $6 per child
