Gem Hunting

What:  We will have a fun adventure getting slightly wet and dirty as we use a sluice to look for gemstones!  Scouts will also be able to work towards earning their Geology belt loop through this activity.

When:  Saturday, 9/15.  Sign up for times below:

 a)  Group 1   9:00-10:15
 b)  Group 2  10:15 -11:30
 c)  Group 3 11:30-12:45
 d)  Group 4 12:45-2:00

Registration will close 9/8/12 12:00 pm or when sign ups are full.

Please arrive promptly.  Each group will have up to one hour to mine their bag and explore the scenic natural stone gardens. 

Cost:  $10 per mining scout, $15 for each mining parent and sibling, observers free.  Payment is due by September 8.  Make checks payable to Pack 216 BSA.  We will collect payment at the pack picnic on August 26th.

Where:  Blue Diamond Gem Mine 1823 Hwy 55 West, Cary, NC  27519 (across from garden center).  Parking is limited to apx. 15 cars, so please park tightly!  http://bluegemz.com/index.html

Other details:  Class uniform B.  Please bring water in case it is hot.  Portions of the sluice are covered, but you may want to bring a hat and sunscreen in case you get an uncovered portion.  The event will be cancelled if it is storming.  Parents will need to discuss how rocks and minerals are used in order to finish up belt loop requirements.  http://www.rocksforkids.com/RFK/uses.html is a site to prompt discussions.

To accomodate the whole pack within the limited size of Blue Gemz's facility we need to split into four groups.  Each group is limited to 20 participants.  Please sign up each participant below.

Each participant with get their own bag of mine ore to process.

Scout participants will be charged $10 and parent/sibling participants are $15.

Obeservers are free and do not need to sign up.
